TEDxUniversityofGlasgow is a society established at the university in 2013 with the aim of
organising an independent TED-like event for the local community of students and staff. Its
aim is to bring together bright minds from the community and beyond in a one day
conference to spread great ideas, spark conversations, and catalyse positive change. The
society has successfully organised four conferences since 2014, and is working towards the
fifth which is scheduled to take place in March 2018.
Every year, new members are admitted to the club through an application process mediated
by the currently operating team. As such, members act as a self-contained (which isn't to
say "rigid") team, and work together to organise the next conference with its own take,
ideas, and creative flair. Applications usually open in April/May. All candidates are welcome!
Within the team, there are six sub-teams: Management (overseeing the work conducted
within the sub-teams), Content (seeking speakers for the conference and entertainment for
guests during breaks), Sponsorship (seeking sponsorship from independent bodies in order
to fund the conference's expenses), Marketing (working to promote the team's efforts,
reach a broader audience, and serve as the main point of contact with the public),
Operations (working to select the venue for the conference, and all equipment and items
required for the smooth running of the event), and the Salon team, which grew out from
the concept of the TED Society, and has been established in early 2017 to engage the local
community at a more direct level. The Salon is a great place to get involved with
TEDxUniversityofGlasgow activities and experience the much talked about TEDx-vibe
through viewings, workshops, and micro-talks.
